Rails in Wales to Maesteg. All stations from Bridgend with 197s
Join us in June 2024 as we join our new train, class 197, from Bridgend on an eight mile journey via Wildmill, Sarn, Tondu, Garth, Ewenny and Maesteg. Passing the large signal box at Tondu we exchange the token for single line working and pass the two redundant lines, now overgrown. These services from Maesteg are for Gloucester and Cheltenham a journey of 85 and 91 miles respectively

These clips were take on the "Preview Day". Ticket holders only, so even with an early start, recording these images on a crowded day ( with other photographers) was quite a task. I wonder how many of the exhibits from 20 years ago are still running, and where are they stabled. Let me know if you have any further information. Thanks in advance...Mike

Compare and contrast the exciting scene in 2009 when local schoolchildren were gathered at the level crossing as the first train in many years returned to G-C-G for the first load of coal for Llanwern. Then in May 2024 I returned to find track lifted and removed but surprisingly warning signs of rail movement still present....what will happen to these collectors items?

    Wow. Maesteg has never had it so good! Looking forward to your trip up to Merthyr once they've completed the OLE installation. Srill think dropping the YWP on the front of trains is a mistake. The headlights just don't catch the eye as well. It was such a simple but effective safety measure.

  • @MervynPartin
    @MervynPartin 2 дні тому

    The acceleration looked quite good for a DMU. Is the ride comfortable? The lineside vegetation is in desperate need of cutting back. Was the Maesteg line transferred to TfW or is it still Network Rail. It would be a shame to see the train paintwork scratched. I could help but notice that when the two guys went into the signal box, one had the top half of an orange overall and the other had the trousers. Are they sharing?

      I don’t think the ride of the Class 197s is particularly good. When heavily loaded the ride is hard. All the Valley Lines have become heavily overgrown as there are no longer any trackside fires! Where work has been done in connection with the South Wales Metro and electrification then vegetation has been cleared.

      @@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways if I had the unlimited funds like the £180 million on the upcoming Euromillions, id try and finance something like this as steam hasn't been seen in Southport since 2012 and steam engines are popular even with those who aren't railway enthusiasts. We should have had steam in Southport in 2013 for a railtour from Southport to Holyhead but the rostered engine Galatea still wasn't ready (this had been planned to be it's inaugural railtour after restoration from Barry Scrapyard condition but it didn't go out on test intime) & 10A was going through a motive power crisis at the time so the tour got diesel hauled. Things could be different now in the 2020's as tours we're not as well advertised back then & there was no such thing as the internet aswell as proper home PC's. When they ran that Roses Express steam tour from Southport to York on 4th April 2012 which was hauled by 48151 I remember seeing posters advertising that trip around Southport. Within a short space of time that tour was actually a complete sell out. If I did manage to plan some id have it where two seperate trains ran with around 6 or 7 coaches (depends on which platform though, 6 is the longest and easily managed 11 coaches plus a 47 and 48151). Each train rake would be with a different steam engine and a diesel (37 or 47) acted as station pilot to move the coaches into and out of the station. I know they couldn't run around in Wigan Wallgate station now as timetables are tighter with more trains but I think they could perform the run around just outside of Wigan in a loop. With servicing I think they could use the engineers siding opposite what was the excursion platforms which is now occupied by Asda and there is a road access gate at Windsor Road opposite the footbridge so a tanker or coal truck could get down. Should they need to turn the locos there is also a triangle in Southport, but it would depend on if there weren't any Merseyrail units blocking the tracks and if they could access platform 3 as the line from the Manchester route onto that triangle was lifted in the 60's and the avoiding line has long gone.

    I understand why TfL has introduced the new service. There’s insufficient line and platform capacity between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street. I’m not sure it’s the best option for passengers. Also, the increased number of trains leaving Cardiff Central for the City Line will cause a major conflict for trains from Barry as they have to cross over to access the City Line. Even before the route changes, trains from Barry were often delayed by trains crossing in front of them. It’s a case of squeezing a quart into a pint pot!

    As a teenager during the early 1980s, I walked through the - by then disused and derelict - Aberdare Tunnel that carried the direct line from Merthyr to Aberdare during the early 1980s. My dad told me he travelled the line several times. I reckon once the new trains are introduced, the journey time from Merthyr to Aberdare via Abercynon will probably be shorter than it was when the tunnel - and the line it served - was operational.

    Very enjoyable, Mike. That last shot was definitely worth waiting for- great vantage point. I do hope something is done about the lineside vegetation- it is even established on the bridge over the mainline. I have recently been informed by Nick Millington, of Network Rail, that there will be no OLE installed between Cardiff Central and Queen Street, with the trains going to use batteries on this stretch. Do you happen to know if Queen Street itself will be wired and if so, down to Cardiff Bay? I am curious as there doesn't seem to be much published information on this in the railway press and TfW's press releases aren't very informative.

    • @StripeyNick

      Queen St isn't being electrified. The wires north of there will start at Heath Jcn in the Rhymney branch and just past Cathays/Crwys Road on the Llandaff branch. They Bay branch looks like it'll be electrified from the new station down to the Bay (and beyond eventually)

    • @anthonywarrener1881
      @anthonywarrener1881 21 день тому

      Thank you for this interesting video. The stanchions for the wires on the Rhymney line start just south of the bridge over Wedal Road, some way south of Heath Junction. It’s a great shame that there was no provision to reinstate at least part of the former double track on the Coryton branch, for if that had been provided, the service could be at 15 minute intervals, with units crossing on the branch. At least with the new timetable trains now run at half hourly intervals all day until very late !

    The film showing how many EWS staff in orange jackets were used just to halt the traffic while the train went across the level crossing shows that railways in Britain make themselvwes uneconomic by applying excessive safety standards. The train's slow speed surely means just one man with a flag and a flashing light was all that was needed to go through the crossings on the Pantyfynnon - Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen line (which branches off the Central Wales Line at Pantyffynnon). The move to end coal production in Britain and the run-down of our steelworks is the sad reason why these trains no longer run. The sensible solution with such a line that can carry trains at slow speed is NOT to lift the track, but leave the track in place and run a weedkiller train over it once a year to stop bushes and trees getting established on the line. Then it doesn't matter who walks on the line while it is out of use; it can be brought back into use one day. This is done in Ireland to keep lines for the future (though it needs local politicians to insist that Irish Rail runs such trains).

    • @TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways

    I guess those "collectors' items" will be / have been, well, collected! When exactly did the line close? Also, now this & Cwmbargoed are no more, our Hertiage railways sector - along with anyone else who requires coal - has to import it from South America: very eco-friendly. We live in a bizarre world.
